(AKA Tickseed, Thread Leaved Coreopsis, Threadleaf Coreopsis)
Coreopsis verticillata 'Moonbeam' creeps to form low, dense mounds with abundant 1 1/2" to 2" lemon yellow daisy-like flowers. Coreopsis Moonbeam is most notable for the quality of the color of bloom, a soft butter yellow that glows in the afternoon and early evening.
Not only are these gorgeous flowers produced in huge quantities, but they also form in succession throughout the summer, all the way through to the arrival of frost in mid to late autumn. Blooms all summer without deadheading or any other attention.
One of the hardiest and easiest plants to grow. Excellent for rock gardens, raised beds, borders and edging or massed as a groundcover, the bright colored flowers make wonderful cut flowers and attract butterflies too!
The intricate needle-like foliage makes 'Moonbeam' stunning even when not in bloom by giving a delicate, lacy look to the garden. This airy, see through habit is a perfect contrast to more "solid" plants. They look great next to those with a broad, dense leaf canopy or those with bigger, bolder flowers.
This light, airy feel is at its best when placed towards the front of beds and borders, as edging along paths, steps and paved areas where they gently spill out over the edges, softening the hard lines and solidness. It is called moonbeam because it is a romantic flower that glows in the moonlight. One of the plants that produce seeds that birds go crazy for.
Easily grown in well drained average to dry soil, tolerates poor soil, humidity, seashore, slopes. This plant is tolerant of drought and wet conditions and spreads by rhizomes, but is not invasive. Perennial Plant Association's 'Perennial of the Year' in 1992.
Good for erosion control and resists mildew. Native to the eastern US, moderate to fast growth rate, prefers full sun. Mature height 18"-24", spacing 14-18".
