Dennstaedtia punctilobula
{24 Pots - 3 1/2 in.}

(AKA Hay Scented Fern, Eastern Hay Scented Fern, often represented as New York Fern)

A fragrant perennial fern with olive green fronds, triangle to oval shaped heavily-divided, lacy leaflets. Excellent massed at woodland edges and in shade gardens, grows to form a carpet.

Reproduces from rhizomes. Prefers moist, well-drained soil but tolerates poor soil, dry and wet conditions. This tough, native fern is tolerant of sunnier and drier sights than most ferns. Moderate growth rate, random growth pattern.

Fronds turn yellow in fall. In hot summer climates, fronds tend to decline by late summer. Good fern for naturalizing in woodland areas, shade gardens, cottage gardens or wild areas. This fern has the unique characteristic of turning toward the greatest available light as it grows. Low maintenance, aggressive spreader under ideal conditions. Mature height 15"-30".

Dennstaedtia punctilobula is a species of deciduous fern that grows across North America, especially in the Appalachian area. It is a very tough fern that can grow in damp or dry soil in the woods or open woods. Its name comes from the fact that crushing its fronds produces an aroma of fresh hay. It can be confused with New York fern, but hayscented fern has triangular fronds, whereas New York fern fronds taper to tiny leaflets at the bottom.
