Gelsemium sempervirens
{24 Pots - 3 1/2 in.}

(AKA Carolina Jasmine, Carolina Jessamine, Yellow Jessamine, Evening Trumpetflower, Wild Jasmine)

The yellow Carolina jasmine (or "jessamine") is an attractive semi-evergreen vine that tends to remain bushy and compact when grown in bright sun. When shaded it will climb up and over adjacent shrubs and trees to heights of more than 20 ft. Carolina jasmine will rapidly cover arbors, tree trunks, trellises, etc. in a season or two.

This is a well behaved vine that can be used on decks and porches and on trellises near patios and entryways. It grows well in containers and as ground cover along steep banks. Carolina jasmine is a good candidate for low maintenance landscapes.

An evergreen native in designated zones. Elongated 1"-4" leaves with yellow, fragrant, 2" long tubular flowers in spring and less profusely in fall. Mature prostrate height 2 feet. Adaptable to most soil conditions. Deer tend to avoid. Tolerates drought, heat & humidity, pollution, rabbits, seashore, slopes. Requires moisture to look its best. Good erosion control, low maintenance. Tolerates frost, persistant freeze will kill. Spacing: 18-36".

WARNING: TOXIC - ingesting the leaves or flowers can be lethal! Do not plant where children might pick the flowers. All parts of this plant contain the toxic strychnine-related alkaloids gelsemine and gelseminine and should not be consumed. The sap may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Children, mistaking this flower for honeysuckle, have been poisoned by sucking the nectar from the flower.

Gelsemium sempervirensis is a twining vine native to warm temperate and tropical America from Guatemala north to the southeastern United States. It can grow to 3-6 m high when given suitable climbing support in trees, with thin stems. The leaves are evergreen, lanceolate, 5-10 cm long and 1-1.5 cm broad, and lustrous, dark green. The flowers are borne in clusters, the individual flowers yellow, sometimes with an orange center, trumpet-shaped, 3 cm long and 2.5-3 cm broad.

Despite the hazards, this is a popular garden plant in warmer areas, frequently being trained to grow over arbors or to cover walls. Yellow Jessamine is the state flower of South Carolina.
