(AKA Blue Rug Juniper, Creeping Juniper)Juniperus horizontalis 'Wiltoni' is a low-growing, creeping groundcover that will grow to a spread of 4-6 feet. Trailing branches form a dense, low mat. Beautiful silvery blue foliage, light purplish/bronze tinge in winter. Spreads slowly to moderately fast.
'Wiltoni' is among the fastest growing junipers and has excellent landscape value as a low ground cover. It is commonly used for mass planting as a turf substitute, on banks, in rock gardens and planter boxes, around tall shrubs or trees or cascading over a wall. It is excellent for erosion control on light to moderate slopes and is particularly effective in sandy locations along coasts or dunes. Often used for bonsai.
This juniper is tolerant of poor soils, even clay, as long as drainage is adequate (prefers a dryish, sandy soil). It does best in full sun.
Tolerates heat, drought, dry growing conditions and city air pollutants. Intolerant of wet soils. Deer tend to avoid, resistant to salt damage. Said to be tolerant of growing near black walnut trees. Shipped with a 4-5" spread. Height 4-6 in, spacing 12-24".
