This ornamental grass creates a dense and lush evergreen ground cover with dark green grass-like clumps of 1/8" leaf blades. A foot-tolerant, no-mow turf substitute - and it thrives in shade, too! Also excellent in rock gardens, between stepping stones, seashore plantings and as edging.

Insignificant white flowers in Summer, bright blue berries in Fall. One of the plants that produce fruit that attract birds. Spreads slowly to moderately fast by stolons. Needs some shade in southern zones, needs to be covered during winter in zone 6. Mature height 2" - 3", spacing 4" - 6".

Mondo grass is an excellent ground cover for shady areas, and the dense mat of roots holds the ground well where runoff is a problem. It is widely used as a border around beds, and is good for edging walkways and defining beds. Dwarf varieties are excellent as a groundcover around shady pools or garden statues: its height will not compete with the feature, dark green will contrast better than a bright green grass, and it will require no mowing. It is also used as an evergreen in planters, mixed with seasonal annuals for color.
