Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Arabicus' (AKA Black Mondo Grass, Black Dragon, Ebony Knight; very similar to 'Nigrescens', Ebknizam)This stylish plant features black (really a dark purple) 1/4" wide leaves, with bell-shaped, pale lavender flowers in summer. New leaves emerge green, but they soon turn black.
Excellent for rock gardens and border edging, highlighting of the stunning foliage is best accomplished through contrasting with lighter colored plants, walls and pavers. Good for underplanting shady woody plants, connecting larger islands and it makes nice dark pools to nestle sculpture in.
Many people ask us about dwarf black mondo grass / dwarf black monkey grass - there is no such thing! The foliage height of this plant is determined by growing conditions, under harsh conditions (poor soil, water, and/or pH) it may grow only 3-4 inches tall.
Blooms are followed by fleshy blue-black to black seeds. One of the plants that produce seeds that attract birds. The foliage remains shiny and pristine all year round, it does not require shearing or any other attention.
