(AKA Black Eyed Susan, BlackEyed Susan, Black-Eyed Susan, Golden Cone Flower, Golden Coneflower)
A classic perennial with 1- to 2-inch bright golden yellow blooms with a deep brown/black cone center. The leaves are coarse, dark green lanceolate to ovate, 3-6 inches long; stem leaves are smaller, almost bract-like. The "gold storm" blankets the tops of 18-30-inch tall plants from mid-July to October.
'Goldsturm' works exceptionally well in both residential and commercial landscapes because of its durability and dramatic visual impact. It attracts butterflies and is an excellent cut flower - adapts to a wide variety of soil conditions. Once established, it spreads rapidly. Deadhead to prolong the blooming season. One of the plants that produce seeds that birds go crazy for.
It is outstanding in mass plantings as a border perennial or noninvasive groundcover. In winter the black stems and seedheads add contrast and texture against the muted tans of ornamental grasses. Heat and drought tolerant, perennials do not come any easier or more hardy and striking than the 'Goldsturm' (sometimes misspelled as 'Goldstrum').
It tolerates clay soils and mild droughts, but grows best in well-drained, consistently moist soil. Mature height 18" - 30", spacing 12" - 24".
