| General information about Astilbe (False Spirea): Species unknown. Some varieties of Astilbe are native to the United States: this one is not likely to be a cultivar of the native variety. Moderate growth rate, and dormant in winter. Deer tend to avoid it. Astilbe is a genus of eighteen species of perennial, herbaceous, flowering plants. Astilbe species are native to Asia and North America. Astilbes are excellent for edging or foreground plantings; in a shady garden, they are great for color and texture. They are cultivated by gardeners as hardy, herbaceous perennial: this is for their large, handsome (often fern-like) foliage and dense, feathery plumes of flowers from mid-June through September. Astilbe flower heads last longer if they are planted away from the afternoon sun. Good for cut and dried arrangements. They thrive best in a moist, peaty soil with organic matter (such as mushroom compost), but will grow in most soils. Well suited for life in bog gardens and alongside streams. If there is sufficient moisture, they will also grow under trees. Deadheading does not induce rebloom, so leave the fading plumes as long as they have any ornamental interest. When the dried seedheads are no longer attractive they can be removed so that the forest-green ferny foliage with mahogany stems can show itself to best effect. For the first year in the ground it may have only a few blooms. As a clump matures it eventually spreads to 18-24 inches wide, providing an intensity of many blooms. They can be planted close enough together to form a continuous groundcover, providing an attractive fern-like foliage from spring to fall. |
