Euonymus fortunei 'Coloratus' {50 Bare Root plants}
|
Coloratus is an evergreen trailing groundcover with oval-shaped (1 1/2- to 2-inch) leaves that turn burgundy in the fall. It is excellent for erosion control and has a rapid growth rate.
Stems root along nodes, spreading indefinitely as a sprawling, tangled, bushy mat. Early spring pruning improves its appearance. Coloratus tolerates any well-drained soil conditions, and is moderately tolerant of salt and foot traffic (though the latter is not encouraged).
Caution: invasive and should only be used in contained areas.

USDA: Characteristics of Euonymus fortunei
| General information about Euonymus fortunei (Wintercreeper): Euonymus fortunei (also commonly known as Fortune's Spindle) is a species of Euonymus native to China, Korea, and Japan. It is a woody evergreen vine that can grow 65 feet tall; similar to ivy, it climbs by means of small rootlets on its stems. This is an example of convergent evolution, as the two species are not related. Like ivy, it also has a sterile, juvenile, non-flowering climbing (or creeping) phase. After growing tall enough to reach the crowns of trees (to obtain more light), it develops into an adult. This flowering phase does not have climbing rootlets. The (1/2- to 2 1/2-inch long and 1/4- to 1 1/2-inch broad) leaves are arranged in opposite pairs, elliptic to elliptic-ovate, with a finely serrated margin. The flowers are inconspicuous (1/8-inch in diameter), with four small greenish-yellow petals. The fruit - if any - are four-lobed, pale-green pod-like berries; inside each lobe is a single fleshy-coated orange seed. |
