Liriope spicata has narrow (1/4-inch wide and 12- to 18- inch long) grass-like leaves. Due to these having an arching habit, they are about 12 inches high in the summer. In late summer, pale lavender (to white) flower spikes rise on 10-inch stalks. In southern zones, this cultivar has evergreen tufts of grassy foliage.

An almost indestructible plant for stubborn areas, it is perfect for banks, beds and at the bases of trees (where roots impede other growth). It is also outstanding for erosion control. This mat-forming Liriope chokes out most weeds and gracefully fills those spots where nothing else will grow. It spreads moderately fast by underground rhizomes. Its foliage resembles very vigorous turf grass, hence the common name.

An excellent low-maintenance turf substitute for low foot traffic areas. Unlike most groundcovers where leaf litter can get entangled, spicata's fallen leaves can be easily raked free from its linear foliage.

This plant tolerates drought, poor soil, heat, humidity, slopes and moist areas; it performs best in moist, fertile soils. It is moderately tolerant of salt, deer tend to avoid it, and it is not suitable for borders. In late winter or very early spring, to maintain Liriope spicata's most attractive appearance, mow or cut back its tops before new growth emerges - its crowns may impede otherwise.

If you are considering purchasing this plant in bare root form, please read about bare root plants (especially the paragraph about bare root grasses) so you know what to expect.

Note: the gallon plants are shipped de-potted and with most of the soil shaken off.
