Heuchera micrantha 'Palace Purple'

One of the most prized native ground covers, coral bells is sturdy and easily grown. This coral bells cultivar is a clump-forming evergreen perennial which features a mound (typically 12" tall) of maple- or ivy-like leaves (3-4" wide) which are an attractive deep mahogany reddish-purple above and beet-red beneath. The best mahogany colored Heuchera on the market.

Foliage color may fade to a bronze-green in hot summers. Off-white bell-shaped flowers on slender dark red stems extend well above the mound of leaves, typically to a height of 15-24" in late spring to early summer.

Excellent for edging, rock gardens, borders, as a facing to buildings and trees or in mass to form an attractive ground cover. 1991 Perennial Plant of the Year. Attractive to hummingbirds.

Will tolerate full sun in Northern climates. Tolerates a wide range of soil types, requires moist, well drained soil. Moderately tolerant of salt. Best performance results from addition of generous amounts of organic matter to the soil. Prefers part shade (particularly with afternoon shade) in the hot summers of the deep South. If grown in full sun, consistent moisture is needed and soil should not be allowed to dry out.

One of the few groundcovers that will grow under walnut trees. Slow growth rate. Named after Johann Heinrich von Heucher (1677-1746), an 18th century German physician. Mature height 12". Spreads 12-18", spacing 12-18".
