Achillea 'Moonshine'
{24 Pots - 3 1/2 in.}

Achillea 'Moonshine'
(AKA Fernleaf Yarrow, A. taygetea)

Fragrant and finely dissected blue-gray foliage frosted with silver highlights has showy canary-yellow flower clusters (up to 4" wide) June to September. Suitable for borders and cut/dried flowers, attracts butterflies.

Tolerates deer, poor soil and drought conditions as long as drainage is good. Withstands heat and humidity well. Deadhead spent flower heads to promote extended blooming.

Fast growth rate, evergreen in northern zones. This form of Achillea is clump forming and does not spread indefinitely like others of the species. Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1993.

Considered to be a hybrid between Achillea cypeolata and A. 'Taygetea' this plant, introduced by Alan Bloom in the 1950's, is one of the best and most durable of the Yarrows. Blooming mature height 18-24", width 12-18", spacing 12-18".

An ornamental plant in the Asteraceae family, this plant is herbaceous and comes from the Caucasus. The flowers are somewhat singular, arranged in corymbs of a multiplex character. They are very large: often 5 inches across. The smaller corymbs are arched or convex causing the cluster or compound corymbs to appear uneven on the surface. The small flowers are very rigid, and of a rich and antiquated gold color; they are likened to knotted gold cord.

The leaves are linear, pinnate, lobed and serrated, hairy, rough, and numerously produced. From the untidy and tall habit of this subject, it should be planted in the background; its flowers, however, claim a prominent position when used in arrangements. They are truly rich; their undulating corymbs have the appearance of an embossed gold plate, and a lady who admires "old-fashioned" flowers compared their antique colour and form to gold braids. It will last for several weeks after being cut and for many days without water.

A few heads placed in an old vase, without any other flowers, are rich and characteristic. The same effect is produced, in a dry state, whilst on bronze figures and ewers. Most especially, on ebony or other black decorations, it causes a more than floral effect. In short, rough as the plant is, it is seldom rivaled and is worth growing for its quaint and rich flowers alone. Ordinary garden loam suits it, and its propagation may be carried out at any time by root division (in the same way which is used for A. aegyptiaca).
