Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop'
(AKA Creeping Bugleweed, Creeping Carpet Bugle, Sicklewort, Carpenter's Herb)

Large deep burgundy scalloped foliage is so dark as to appear black. From late spring into early summer, this plant is covered with showy rich, deep blue blooms on 8-10" spikes. They cover ground quickly, forming a weed-choking mat that replaces artificial mulches and adds dramatic color to any garden.

The more sun this cultivar receives, the darker the foliage will be. Even more tolerant of drought and poor soils than other Ajugas, rarely eaten by deer. The rich foliage and spring flowers make this a popular choice for replacing turf grass, especially under trees and other areas where mowing (such as over roots) can be dangerous.

Light foot traffic is tolerated. Good for mixed container plantings, where it will trail over the sides of a planter. Attracts butterflies, one of the few groundcovers that will grow under walnut trees. Evergreen in mild climates.

If desired, cut foliage back to the ground after flowering to rejuvenate the foliage. Mow large areas of bugleweed with a lawn mower; however, in small patches of Ajuga, trim plants back with pruning shears or weed trimmer. Where not wanted, trim back the runners before they take root.

Mature height 3-6". For a quick weed-suppressing ground cover, space plants 8 to 12 inches apart when planting (they spread 2 to 3 feet wide, so they may be spaced farther apart for more gradual coverage). Tolerances: deer, drought, pollution, slopes.
