It is sometimes called "spirea" because it looks like Aruncus spirea. Blooms Pink, May-July. One of the few groundcovers that will grow under walnut trees.

Species unknown. Some varieties of Astilbe are native to the U.S., this one is not likely to be a cultivar of a native variety. Moderate growth rate, dormant in winter. Deer tend to avoid. Mature height 18"-24", spacing 12"-18".

Astilbe is a great plant for color and texture in the shade garden, excellent for edging or foreground plantings. They are cultivated by gardeners as hardy herbaceous perennials, for their large handsome, often fern-like foliage, and dense, feathery plumes of flowers from mid-June through September. The flower heads last longer if they are planted to avoid the afternoon sun. Good for cut and dried arrangements.
