Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea' is an attractive herbaceous perennial. In the early summer, cupped (3/4-inch diameter) golden yellow blooms cover this tasteful ground cover. Aurea's leaves are golden yellow when grown in full sun and lime green when grown in the shade. Aurea lends striking contrast to shadier areas and has been complimented as giving "oomph to garden-variety plants".
Aurea is low-growing, forming an aggressive mat that is skilled at naturalizing in a variety of conditions. Due to this talent, Aurea should not be planted in borders or areas that connect with lawns. However, it is excellent for woodland gardens, cascading over stone walls, growing under taller plants, running along paths or banks, and even as a unique hanging basket selection.
Unlike some other groundcovers, this Lysimachia prefers moist and damp soils; it thrives by streams, near water gardens, or alongside ponds and pools. Aurea can tolerate light foot traffic and is resistant to deer and rabbits. Good for erosion control. An extremely low-maintenance groundcover, the only long-term care needed is not allowing it to dry out between waterings.
Aurea dies back in the winter; however, it is semi-evergreen in temperate regions. Medium to fast growth rate. Height 2-4", spacing 9-15".
