Matteuccia struthiopteris
{50 Bare Root plants}

Ostrich Fern (Fiddlehead Fern, Garden Fern, Hardy Fern, Shuttlecock Fern)

Synonyms: Matteuccia pensylvanica, Matteuccia pennsylvanica, Pteris nodulosa, Struthiopteris filicastrum, Struthiopteris pensylvanica, Struthiopteris pennsylvanica, Osmunda struthiopteris.

Ostrich ferns feature erect divided and lance-shaped fronds that arch gracefully outwards into a symmetric clump. They are dramatic for foliage backdrops, foundation and boundary plantings, naturalizing and fresh arrangements.

It grows from a completely vertical crown but sends out lateral stolons to form new crowns. It thus can form dense colonies resistant to destruction by floodwaters.

Ostrich ferns require moist soil, especially in hot, dry climates (the more moisture, the larger the plant). It does best if planted in partial shade, in a deep loamy mix enriched with plenty of organic matter but can also grow in heavy clay soil. Mulch lightly with leaves around the slightly exposed crown, and in no time, a beautiful fern thicket will be sprouting lush growth.

It is winter dormant, growth rate is moderate. However, under good conditions it tends to spread aggressively by stout rhizomes. The edible tightly wound immature frond (called fiddleheads) appearing in spring are a delicacy and - as the state vegetable of Vermont - are considered a delicacy.

Reproduces by spores and vegetatively by rhizomes; Fertile fronds produced after vegetative fronds and persist throughout the following winter. Spores shed mid-winter. Easy to grow, low maintenance, can take quite a bit of sun. Mature height 36"-72", spacing: 24"-36". After spring these are shipped cut back to about 8" tall for shipment.

Note: bare root ferns require considerably more time to become established and begin growth. Often there will be little or no growth the first season, with full growth rate beginning the second season. Get this fern in soil if you want significant growth the first season.

Part sun Shade

We do not recommend shipping this fern in bare root form - the pint version is OK - during the heat of summer (June 15 - September 15). Although our shipments are expedited (3 days at most), the bare root form of this plant tends to suffer more than average plants when shipped during this period.
ANY ORDERS PLACED FOR THIS ITEM BETWEEN JUNE 15 AND SEPTEMBER 15 ARE AT YOUR RISK - WE WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO THIS ITEM DURING SHIPMENT.
