Veronica p. ’Georgia Blue’
{24 Pots - 3 1/2 in.}

Veronica peduncularis ’Georgia Blue’
(AKA Veronica umbrosa, ’Oxford Blue’, Speedwell ’Georgia Blue’, creeping veronica)

A new and rare semi-prostrate Veronica. Veronica "Georgia Blue" is one of those few perennials at their peak in early spring, profuse showy brilliant violet-blue flowers with white centers abound from February to April.

The foliage is reddish-green in spring, fading to dark green and turning bronze to ruddy purple in autumn and winter. This evergreen to mostly evergreen perennial grows just 4-6" high but creeps and spreads quickly to two feet wide or more to form a dense, compact mat.

Although it grows vigorously and spreads by creeping rootstocks, it’s not aggressive or invasive. When it reaches the limits of its growing area, it can be sheared back and easily maintained within a bed.

"Georgia Blue" is excellent for underplanting spring bulbs, as your daffodils, tulips, etc., will easily protrude above the low foliage and you will have two tiers of spring color. It also works well winding itself under ferns and small perennials. Useful in borders, edging, containers, and rock gardens, it provides the visual appeal of a woodland stream cascading over rocks or spilling over the sides of containers. As a ground cover it makes an interesting alternative to grass.

Discovered in the former Soviet republic of Georgia in 1979, this easy-to-grow, tough, drought- and heat-tolerant, low-maintenance plant is extremely hardy (surviving temperatures below -20F) and is adaptable throughout a wide climate range. The flowers are highly attractive to butterflies. Deadheading will prolong the blooming season but is not required. It prefers moist, slightly to moderately acidic soil with excellent drainage. Mature prostrate height 4-6", spacing 8-12".
