Vinca minor 'Traditional' is an evergreen trailing vine that has lustrous glossy green (1/2-inch by 1 1/2-inch) leaves; its mid-vein is prominent and whitish. Though uncommon for an evergreen groundcover, this plant's profuse blue/violet (1/2-inch to 3/4-inch) blooms cover it in early spring. These flowers persist sporadically from summer through frost.

Like most Vinca, it does best in partial shade and produces fewer blooms in deep shade. 'Traditional' needs shade in zone 9, prefers shade in zones 7-8, and tolerates full sun (with regular watering) in zones 4-6.

'Traditional' fills spaces faster when grown in organic, moist, well-drained loamy soil; it also grows quite well in heavy clay, as long as it gets adequate moisture. This cultivar spreads quickly once established.

This Vinca is tolerant of infrequent foot traffic and it tends to deter deer. Vinca spreads by re-rooting where the runners touch the ground, so it will spread better if there is at most a thin layer of mulch. Caution: invasive, should only be used in contained areas.

General information about Vinca (Periwinkle, Myrtle):
Vinca is a low-maintenance delight: it is great for window boxes, controlling soil erosion on shady slopes, and for covering the soil under trees and shrubs.

Vinca (from Latin vincire "to bind, fetter") is a genus of five species in the family Apocynaceae; it is native to Europe, northwest Africa and southwest Asia. Vinca’s common name, shared with its related genus Catharanthus, is Periwinkle.

They are subshrubs (woody bases with herbaceous habits), and have slender trailing stems. These (3-7 feet long and no more than 2 feet high) stems frequently take root where they touch the ground, enabling the plant to spread widely. Its (1/5- to 3 1/2-inch long and 1/8- to 3 1/2-inch broad) leaves are opposite, simple, broad, and lanceolate to ovate shaped.

As with Phlox, Vinca’s flowers are salverform (five united petals forming a tube that spreads at its open end); they are simple, 1-3 inches broad, and abundant through most of the year. Vinca fruits consist of clustered divergent follicles: they are dry and dehiscent along one rupture site to release seeds.

Both species - the Small Periwinkle V. minor and the Large Periwinkle V. major - are very popular ornamental plants. Utilized most in gardens, they are grown for their delicate violet flowers, and their density as evergreen ground covers. As compared to V. minor, V. major is less cold hardy, and has broader (and hairier) leaves, larger flowers, and twice as many chromosomes. A variegated selection of V. major is commonly cultivated.
