Yarrow (Achillea)
Achillea carries the dry brightness of open ground into the garden, with finely divided, aromatic foliage that often feels feathery to the eye even when the plant itself is tough and wiry. The leaves, usually gray-green to deep green and sometimes almost fernlike, form low mounds or spreading clumps from which flowering stems rise in a clean, horizontal gesture. Those flat-topped clusters, made of many small composite flowers, bring a woven surface of cream, yellow, rose, copper, red, or white depending on species and cultivar. The geometry is quietly useful: it contrasts beautifully with spires, bells, grasses, and rounded shrubs.
The genus is especially persuasive in summer, when heat makes softer plants collapse and Achillea often becomes more assured. Its umbels or corymbs invite bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, while the aromatic foliage is generally unappealing to deer and rabbits. Many garden selections dry well on the stem, fading into parchment, buff, or muted russet; this after-color can be as valuable as the fresh bloom in borders designed for texture. The plant is not delicate in constitution, yet the divided foliage and hovering flower plates give it a fine, dry grace rather than a heavy prairie bluntness.
Most Achilleas ask for full sun, sharp drainage, and soil that is not overly rich. Too much fertility or shade can make stems lax, and some forms spread by rhizomes or seed with more vigor than a small formal bed can comfortably hold. Deadheading may prolong flowering, while leaving selected seedheads can preserve the late-season silhouette. In naturalistic plantings, gravel gardens, herb borders, and sunny perennial compositions, Achillea is valuable because it edits rather than clutters: it lays a pale, aromatic plane across the planting and lets neighboring forms rise through it with greater definition.
Its dried heads also bring a valuable discipline to winter editing. If some stems are left standing, they hold frost and snow in small plates, while cut stems can be removed from the foreground where neatness matters more. This flexibility lets Achillea belong both to relaxed meadow plantings and to more polished borders that still want a trace of dry summer air.
