Spotted Laurel (Aucuba)

Aucuba is a shrub of shade, gloss, and composure, often used where many evergreens thin or sulk. Its leaves are broad, leathery, and opposite, with a surface that reflects even modest light; in variegated forms they may be speckled or splashed with yellow, giving the plant a warm glimmer in dim positions. The habit is rounded to upright, dense enough to provide screening but usually soft-edged rather than rigid. In sheltered courtyards, under high trees, or beside north-facing walls, Aucuba can make shadow feel intentional and furnished.

The flowers are small and dark, easily missed among the leaves, but female plants may bear bright red berries when a compatible male is nearby. Those berries sit against the glossy foliage with a lacquered richness that suits winter gardens. The plant’s effect is not floral drama; it is a steady surface, a clean evergreen mass, and the satisfaction of foliage that remains handsome through seasons when herbaceous plants have withdrawn. Plain green forms can be especially elegant, while spotted selections need thoughtful placement so their brightness reads as light rather than clutter.

Aucuba generally prefers part to full shade, protection from harsh winter wind, and soil that is reasonably fertile and not waterlogged. It tolerates dry shade better than many broad-leaved evergreens once established, though growth is fuller with some moisture. In colder regions, exposed leaves may burn, and in hot sun variegated foliage can scorch. The berries and foliage should not be treated as edible. Used with restraint, Aucuba is invaluable for quiet structure, offering polished leaves, winter fruit on female plants, and a calm evergreen presence where the garden might otherwise lose depth.

Because variegated selections are visually strong, they are often most successful as punctuation within deeper green shade. A plain form can provide the main mass, while a spotted form draws light to an entrance or corner. This careful use keeps Aucuba elegant, preventing its cheerful brightness from becoming restless.
