Bugloss, Forget-Me-Not (Brunnera)

Brunnera brings coolness and clarity to shade, beginning in spring with sprays of small blue flowers that resemble forget-me-nots but rise from a more substantial perennial base. The leaves are heart-shaped, often broad and softly textured, and in many modern cultivars they are overlaid with silver, veining, or pale netting that brightens dim ground. This foliage is the enduring pleasure. After the blue flowers fade, the leaves continue to hold the planting together, making a calm, luminous surface beneath shrubs and woodland perennials.

The spring flowers are delicate, borne in airy clusters on slender stems, and their blue is especially effective with hellebores, narcissus, pulmonarias, epimediums, and emerging ferns. As the season settles, Brunnera’s leaves expand into rounded mounds, their surfaces catching stray light under trees. Silvered forms can make shade feel wider and cooler, though they remain grounded by the heaviness of the heart-shaped blade. The plant offers tenderness without fragility, combining small flowers with foliage broad enough to matter in design.

Brunnera generally prefers part shade to shade, humus-rich soil, and consistent moisture, though it dislikes waterlogged conditions. In hot sun or drought, leaves may scorch or collapse, while cooler, evenly moist sites keep them handsome much longer. Seedlings may appear, especially from green-leaved forms, and variegated cultivars may not come true from seed. Used near paths or shaded seating areas, Brunnera gives the garden a composed spring freshness followed by months of polished foliage, a reliable way to make shade feel refined rather than merely filled.

Silver-leaved cultivars can make shade feel luminous, but they need companions that keep the effect grounded. Dark hellebores, green ferns, or matte epimediums prevent the silver from becoming cold. Brunnera works best as a quiet layer of light, brightening the floor of shade without breaking its calm. Its broad leaves also conceal the fading foliage of early bulbs, allowing spring’s first brightness to pass into summer shade without a visible rupture.
