New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus)
Ceanothus, often called California lilac, is a genus of sun, dry slopes, and luminous blue bloom. Many species are evergreen shrubs with small, glossy, or textured leaves, while others are deciduous or more open in habit. In spring or early summer, dense clusters of tiny flowers cover the stems in shades of blue, violet, lavender, white, or pale pink. The blue forms can be extraordinary, not because each flower is large, but because thousands together create a saturated surface that seems to hold the color of clear western sky.
The plants also have ecological substance. Many Ceanothus species form nitrogen-fixing associations in their roots, allowing them to thrive in lean soils, and their flowers are valuable to bees and other insects. The foliage is usually small and drought-adapted, giving the shrubs a close-grained texture that looks right against chaparral companions, gravel, oaks, salvias, and manzanitas. Some forms mound low over banks, while others become large shrubs or small trees with handsome branching. The beauty is strongest when the plant is allowed to keep its natural outline rather than being forced into a wet, clipped, formal role.
Most Ceanothus needs full sun, excellent drainage, and little summer water once established, particularly in Mediterranean climates. Many resent heavy clay, humid heat, and severe cold, and they are often short-lived if over-irrigated. Hardiness and tolerance vary greatly, so species and cultivar choice should follow region. Used where conditions suit it, Ceanothus offers one of the garden’s most vivid unions of color and restraint: small leaves, tough stems, fragrant clusters, and a blue flowering season that can make a dry slope feel suddenly luxurious.
Its spring color can be overwhelming if treated as ordinary shrub bloom, so it often looks best against quiet companions. Silver foliage, dark manzanita stems, native grasses, or open mulch allow the blue to breathe. Ceanothus is most elegant where drought-adapted restraint frames its one extravagant flowering gesture.
