Snow-in-Summer (Cerastium)

Cerastium, especially the snow-in-summer types, is a genus of mats, silver leaves, and bright white bloom. Many ornamental species form low carpets of small, opposite leaves covered in fine hairs, giving the foliage a felted gray or silver appearance. This surface is strongly adapted to sun and dryness, and in the garden it creates a cool visual plane along walls, steps, and rock edges. The plant’s softness is tactile but dry, more like wool or felt than lush green growth.

In late spring or early summer, white starry flowers rise above the mats, often in such quantity that the foliage seems dusted or covered with snow. The effect can be charming, especially where it spills over stone or contrasts with dark-leaved companions. After flowering, the silver foliage remains the main asset, though stems may become loose or untidy if not trimmed. Cerastium’s beauty is strongest when its vigor is matched to a place where spreading is welcome, such as a bank, wall, or dry edge.

Most Cerastiums prefer full sun, lean well-drained soil, and conditions that are not overly moist or fertile. In rich ground they may grow too quickly and lose compactness; in humid climates they can decline after flowering. Some species spread readily and may seed about, making them unsuitable beside delicate alpines or small formal plants. Shearing after bloom restores a neater mat. Used with discipline, Cerastium gives dry sunny places a pale, velvety finish, combining silver foliage and white flowers in a manner that is simple, bright, and unmistakably grounded in its drought-adapted form.

The silver mat should be allowed to meet stone, gravel, or dry timber, where its color and texture make visual sense. Set among thirsty green plants, it can look out of place; set in a hot, lean edge, it appears perfectly adapted. Its elegance comes from belonging to austerity. Its pale color is especially effective at the front of evening gardens, where the silver leaves remain visible after green foliage has receded into dusk.
