Smokebush (Cotinus)
Cotinus, the smokebushes, is a genus of rounded leaves, airy inflorescences, and theatrical but disciplined color. The shrubs or small trees often develop an open, branching framework clothed in simple oval leaves that may be green, blue-green, purple, gold, or wine-colored in cultivated forms. In summer, the flower clusters expand into fine, hairlike pedicels that create the famous smoky effect, a translucent haze of pink, gray, beige, or purple around the branch tips. The display is not a solid bloom but an atmosphere.
Foliage contributes as much as flower. Purple-leaved forms bring depth and shadow to borders, while golden selections catch light with a warm clarity that can be magnificent if not overused. Autumn color may be orange, red, or scarlet, especially in green-leaved forms. Cotinus pairs well with grasses, roses, perennials, and pale stone, but its strong color and smoky texture require restraint. A single specimen can be more effective than repetition, allowing the plant’s unusual inflorescence and rounded leaves to become a deliberate focal point.
Cotinus generally prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and established plants tolerate drought better than many shrubs. In too much shade, foliage color and flowering may weaken. Hard pruning encourages large, dramatic leaves on some cultivars but often sacrifices flowers for that season; lighter pruning preserves the smoky display and natural form. The plant can become rangy if poorly placed. Used with judgment, Cotinus offers a rare combination of tactile haze, rounded foliage, and rich color, giving sunny plantings a sense of warmth and depth without relying on conventional flowers.
Its smoky plumes are most atmospheric when backlit, so placement against evening or morning light can transform the shrub. Dark-leaved forms also need enough space around them, since their visual weight can dull nearby plants. Cotinus is dramatic, but its drama becomes elegant only when given air. A calm underplanting of grasses or low perennials lets the smoky inflorescences hover, preserving the airy quality that gives the shrub its name.
