Ferns

Ferns add dramatic, sweeping textures and contrasting colors to your landscape. They are effective in mass plantings, as borders and as accent plants. Our ferns thrive in part shade and full shade. Dryopteris ludoviciana (Southern Shield Fern) and Dennstaedtia punctilobula (Hay-scented Fern) even tolerate full sun throughout the range of U.S. zones (check each plant description for details). Some are evergreen or semi-evergreen, and most are rarely eaten by deer.

Ferns bring to the garden a presence unlike that of flowering plants: quieter, older in feeling, and deeply attuned to the grace of shade, texture, and air. Their beauty is held in fronds rather than blossoms—in unfurling lines, layered silhouettes, and a finely composed softness that can make even a simple planting feel more intimate and considered. Across this wide and varied group, the foliage often suggests movement even when the garden is still: arching, feathering, rippling, or spreading with a gentle composure that reads as both delicate and assured.

Their ornamental character lies in refinement rather than display. Ferns can lend a cool, silken depth to the edges of paths, the shelter of trees, the base of stone, or the quiet spaces between more emphatic plants. Some form low, intricate carpets of green; others rise with more architectural poise; many occupy the middle ground with an ease that softens hard lines and settles a composition. Because the group is diverse, their textures range from lace-fine to broad and polished, yet the shared effect is one of layered calm: a tactile richness that invites the eye to slow down.

In cultivated gardens, ferns are valued for atmosphere as much as form. They create a sense of refuge, bringing visual coolness, gentle enclosure, and a touch of woodland hush to spaces that might otherwise feel exposed or abrupt. Their fronds catch light softly, turning shadow into nuance rather than absence, and their repeated patterns offer the comfort of order without rigidity. Whether used as a restrained underplanting or woven through a more naturalistic scheme, ferns give the garden an element of ease—quiet, fluent, and enduringly graceful.
