Hands down, Heuchera is a true must-for-just-about-every-garden style. The incredibly thick, colorful foliage is excellent for borders and edging, rock gardens, and facings to buildings and trees.

Its wavy and luxurious leaves make it a lovely addition to English-cottage style gardens as a singular plant, yet it is equally lovely in a border setting where it adds depth and structure. In mass, it forms an attractive ground cover, and its presence tends to attract hummingbirds.

These species have a slow growth rate and are some of the few groundcovers that can grow under walnut trees. Ideally, plan to give Heuchera moist, well-drained soil, though she is tolerant of a wide range of soil types and is even moderately tolerant of salt.

If you live in northern climates, Heuchera will tolerate full sun. In hot summers of southern regions, gardeners seek Heuchera out because she prefers part shade, particularly in the afternoon. It is rare to find such a show-stopper for a shade garden.
