Bitterroot (Lewisia)
Lewisia is a genus of alpine and dryland perennials whose small size is matched by remarkable floral intensity. Many species form rosettes of fleshy leaves, sometimes evergreen, sometimes deciduous, adapted to rocky slopes, screes, and places where drainage is swift. The leaves may be smooth, narrow, spoon-shaped, or succulent, held close to the crown in a way that makes the plant look compact and self-contained. In a trough, crevice garden, or raised alpine bed, the rosette alone can be satisfying.
The flowers rise from this modest base in colors that can be startlingly vivid: pink, coral, salmon, orange, white, yellow, or striped combinations, often with a satin sheen. They may appear in clusters on short stems, hovering just above the rosette like small, luminous cups. The contrast between dry, gritty habitat and silky bloom is the heart of Lewisia's charm. It is not a plant for broad massing; it is a close-view treasure, best placed where its precise proportions and bright petals can be appreciated.
Lewisia requires excellent drainage, especially around the crown, and many species resent winter wet more than cold. Full sun is suitable in cool climates, while afternoon shade may protect plants where summers are hot. Gritty soil, raised planting, and careful watering are more important than rich fertility. Some forms are easier than others, but all ask for attention to their alpine nature. The genus brings a polished delicacy to stone: succulent leaves, clear flowers, and a compact resilience that feels luxurious precisely because it is so exacting.
In a refined alpine setting, Lewisia should be treated almost like a small object of craft. The crown needs to sit high, with grit around it, so water drains away quickly after rain. Companions should be low and not too leafy, allowing air to move around the rosette. A trough or crevice can provide the perfect stage, lifting the plant to eye level. Lewisia rewards this precision with bloom that feels all the more luxurious because the plant itself remains so compact and disciplined.
