Siberian Cypress (Microbiota)
Microbiota, the Siberian cypress, is a low evergreen conifer valued for soft, spreading texture and exceptional cold tolerance. The plants form broad, layered mats of flattened sprays, with scale-like foliage that resembles a delicate juniper or arborvitae but lies close to the ground. In summer the color is usually fresh to deep green; in winter it often turns bronze, plum, or russet, a seasonal change that can alarm the unfamiliar but is part of the plant's character.
The habit is horizontal and sheltering, making Microbiota useful on slopes, along walls, at the front of shrub borders, or beneath taller, open plantings where a low evergreen plane is needed. Its fine sprays soften stone and soil without the prickliness of many junipers. The cones are small and not ornamental in a conspicuous way; the foliage and form carry the display. In cold climates, the plant can provide a refined groundcover effect where more delicate evergreens fail.
Microbiota prefers well-drained soil, moderate moisture, and sun to part shade, often appreciating some protection from harsh winter sun or drying winds. It dislikes hot, humid, poorly drained conditions, and it should not be buried under heavy mulch. Growth is slow to moderate, spreading wider than tall, so spacing should allow the layered sprays to develop naturally. The genus offers quiet durability: fernlike evergreen texture, winter bronzing, and a low, composed form that makes exposed ground feel protected and finished.
Its winter bronzing can be used deliberately, especially near pale grasses, snow, or evergreen shrubs that remain dark green. In summer, the fine sprays provide a soft ground plane that does not demand mowing or frequent shaping. It should be spaced for width, not height, and allowed to layer naturally rather than being clipped into stiffness. Microbiota is a plant of quiet endurance, ideal where low evergreen cover must look refined in a cold-climate garden. Its low habit also protects soil from winter exposure while keeping the planting visually calm and uncluttered.
