Powdery mildew is common, especially in dry, crowded, or poorly ventilated sites, so resistant cultivars and good spacing matter. Cutting back after bloom can encourage fresh growth, and division controls spread. In design, Monarda is best where its informality is welcome: with grasses, phlox, echinacea, rudbeckia, and native shrubs. It offers an exuberant but grounded beauty, carried in scented leaves, tiered flowers, and the constant motion of pollinators.

Color restraint is especially important with Monarda, whose flower heads can be vivid and whose habit is naturally informal. Repeating one or two mildew-resistant cultivars gives a stronger effect than mixing many colors. The aromatic foliage can be attractive in its own right, especially near paths where brushing releases scent.
