Sweetgale, Bayberry (Myrica)
Myrica, broadly including bayberries and sweet gale relatives in older garden usage, is a genus of aromatic shrubs associated with coastal, wetland, and sandy landscapes. Leaves are usually simple, narrow to oblong, and dotted with resin glands that release a spicy, balsamic scent when crushed. Some species are deciduous, others evergreen or semi-evergreen, and many tolerate difficult conditions such as salt, wind, poor soil, or periodic wetness. Their appearance is often understated, but their fragrance gives them depth.
The flowers are small catkins or inconspicuous clusters, not showy, and plants may be dioecious or have separate male and female structures depending on species. Female bayberries can produce waxy gray or bluish fruits, historically used for bayberry candles and attractive to birds. The foliage, fruit, and branching create a natural, textural effect rather than a formal ornamental display. In coastal gardens, Myrica can make wind and salt feel like part of the design, not obstacles to it.
Many Myrica relatives have associations with nitrogen-fixing actinomycetes, helping them persist in lean soils, though specific behavior varies by species and taxonomy. They generally prefer sun to part shade and soil suited to their native habitat, whether sandy and dry or moist and acidic. Pruning can keep shrubs dense, but their best character is often informal. The genus is valuable for hedges, wildlife plantings, rain gardens, and seaside buffers. It offers aromatic leaves, waxy fruit, and a resilient, wind-shaped beauty that feels especially at home where gardens meet rougher land.
In design, Myrica is particularly useful as a plant of edges: between garden and marsh, lawn and dune, cultivated border and wilder thicket. Its scent makes pruning or brushing past the shrub pleasurable, and its fruits bring winter interest without florid display. Female fruiting forms may require compatible males nearby, depending on species. The genus offers a practical elegance suited to resilient landscapes, where fragrance, wildlife value, and environmental tolerance matter as much as bloom.
