Sedum, broadly understood as the stonecrops still kept under that name in horticulture, is a genus of succulent leaves, starry flowers, and exceptional usefulness in dry, sunny places. The plants range from tiny creeping mats to upright border perennials, though some familiar tall species have been moved by botanists into Hylotelephium. Leaves are fleshy and water-storing, often rounded, needle-like, spoon-shaped, or flattened, with colors that may be green, blue, gray, bronze, red, or variegated. Their smooth surfaces and compact forms give the genus a tactile clarity unlike softer herbaceous plants.

The flowers are usually small and star-shaped, gathered in clusters that can be white, yellow, pink, red, or cream. In low species, bloom may cover the foliage like a bright sheet; in taller forms, flat or rounded heads attract bees, butterflies, and other insects late in the season. The succulent foliage is often ornamental long before flowers appear, catching light along edges and changing color with sun, drought, or cold. Sedum’s beauty is therefore continuous at a modest scale: leaf, mat, bud, flower, and winter seedhead in selected forms.

Most Sedum species prefer full sun and sharply drained soil, with tolerance for drought once established. Rich, wet soil can cause rot or soft, weak growth, while shade reduces color and density. Some low stonecrops spread quickly and may move beyond intended spaces, though their shallow roots often make editing easy. They are invaluable for rock gardens, walls, containers, green roofs, edging, and pollinator-friendly late-season plantings. Sedum offers an honest dry-garden elegance: smooth leaves, low resilience, and flowers bright enough to make poor soil look deliberate.

Sedum is most elegant when its succulence is treated as a design quality, not only as a survival trait. Smooth leaves can echo pebbles, roof gravel, or glazed pottery, while late flowers can bring bees to places that otherwise look austere. The genus also helps solve scale: tiny mats suit crevices, and larger forms anchor sunny borders. Each succeeds when drainage and proportion are respected.
