Salix, the willows, is a large genus of deciduous trees and shrubs defined by pliant stems, narrow or rounded leaves, and a close relationship with water and light. Some species become large riverside trees with sweeping branches, while others remain low alpine shrubs or garden-sized forms selected for colored stems, contorted growth, or silvery foliage. Leaves are usually simple and alternate, often lance-shaped with a soft sheen or felted underside. The stems can be yellow, orange, red, purple, green, or brown, giving winter plantings a living color line after leaves have fallen.

Willow flowers are catkins, often appearing early and providing important pollen or nectar for insects when few other woody plants are active. Pussy willows, with their silky gray catkins, are among the most tactile signs of spring, while other species produce slender yellow or green catkins that move lightly in wind. Seeds are borne with cottony hairs, and the genus’s readiness to root from cuttings is famous. This vitality is central to Salix: it grows, bends, repairs, and colonizes with remarkable ease.

Most willows prefer moist soil and full sun, though tolerances vary widely. Their vigorous roots and appetite for water make large species unsuitable near drains, foundations, small ponds, or confined urban spaces. Many need regular pruning if grown for colored stems, since young growth is brightest. In the right context—stream banks, rain gardens, coppiced winter displays, wildlife plantings, or spacious lawns—Salix is invaluable. It brings softness without weakness, using flexible stems, early catkins, and water-loving growth to create shelter, movement, and seasonal immediacy.

Willows can make a garden feel immediate because they respond so visibly to pruning, moisture, and season. Coppiced colored-stem forms create winter brilliance, while larger trees bring shade and movement near water. The same responsiveness can become a liability in confined sites, so generosity of space is not optional. Salix is a plant for places where vigor, flexibility, and water can be composed rather than resisted.
