Lamb's Ear, Betony (Stachys)

Stachys is a mint-family genus with a wide range of garden personalities, from the silvery softness of lamb’s ear to upright flowering betony and moisture-loving hedge nettles. Many species have square stems, opposite leaves, and a tactile surface that may be woolly, wrinkled, glossy, or aromatic. The foliage often carries much of the ornamental value. Lamb’s ear, with its dense silver hairs, creates a low, plush mat that softens hard edges, while greener perennial species form clumps suited to meadow or border plantings.

The flowers are typically two-lipped and arranged in spikes or whorls, appearing in pink, purple, lavender, red, white, or yellowish tones depending on species. In some forms the flowers are secondary to foliage, and removing them can keep the plant neater; in others, such as betony, the upright spikes are a valuable summer feature that attracts bees and other pollinators. The contrast between soft leaves and vertical bloom gives the genus flexibility, allowing it to serve as groundcover, edging, pollinator plant, or textural foil.

Cultural needs vary, but many Stachys species prefer sun to light shade and well-drained soil. Silver woolly forms dislike humid, wet conditions and can rot or look ragged in heavy soil, while moisture-tolerant species accept richer ground. Some spread by rhizomes and should be placed where a colony is welcome or easily edited. Stachys offers a rare tactile appeal in the garden: leaves that invite touch, flower spikes that bring pollinators, and a texture that can read as soft, rustic, or refined depending on the chosen species and companions.

The tactile nature of Stachys makes placement unusually important. Lamb’s ear near a path invites touch, while flowering betony among grasses invites insects and introduces vertical rhythm. Silver forms can look tired in humidity unless drainage and air are good, so their softness should not be mistaken for fragility. The genus is most refined when its texture is matched honestly to the conditions it can sustain.
