Wall Germander (Teucrium)

Teucrium, the germanders, is a mint-family genus with aromatic foliage, small flowers, and a useful range of habits from low edging plants to shrubby Mediterranean species. Many have square stems and opposite leaves, often gray-green, glossy, woolly, or finely toothed. The foliage can be clipped into low hedges, allowed to spill over stone, or used as a drought-tolerant texture in sunny borders. Its character is often dry, resinous, and composed, more about surface and structure than floral extravagance.

The flowers are usually small and two-lipped in a distinctive way, often lacking a prominent upper lip and appearing in shades of pink, purple, lavender, blue, or white. They are attractive to bees and can be produced over a long period in warm, sunny conditions. In some species, the floral display creates a delicate haze above silver or dark green foliage; in others, it is secondary to the clipped or shrubby outline. Teucrium’s beauty is especially clear in gravel gardens, herb gardens, and Mediterranean-style plantings, where its aromatic leaves suit the surrounding dryness.

Most Teucrium species prefer full sun and well-drained soil, with many tolerating drought once established. Heavy wet soil and excessive fertility can weaken growth or reduce hardiness. Some species can be clipped after flowering to maintain density, while others are better left with a looser natural habit. A few have been used historically as herbs, but some germanders have toxicity concerns and should not be used medicinally without expertise. In the garden, Teucrium provides disciplined texture: aromatic leaves, small pollinator flowers, and a dry elegance that pairs beautifully with lavender, santolina, thyme, and grasses.

Germander is particularly useful where a small evergreen or semi-evergreen line is needed but boxwood would feel too formal or too thirsty. Clipped low, it can edge a herb garden with aromatic discipline; left looser, it settles into gravel and sun with Mediterranean ease. Its flowers are modest, so foliage quality and pruning rhythm carry the design. That restraint is precisely its strength.
