The genus offers quiet distinction: fine divided leaves, unusual spring flowers, yellow-rooted character, and autumn color held close to the ground.

Yellowroot is particularly useful where a conventional herbaceous groundcover would disappear in winter and a larger shrub would be too heavy. Its woody stems give a low permanent framework, while its fine leaves keep the surface light. Repeated along a shaded bank or stream edge, it can stabilize soil and add seasonal color without looking ornamental in a forced way. Its modesty is exactly its value.
