Ti Plant, Cabbage Palm (Cordyline)
Cordyline brings strong linear foliage and tropical or subtropical color to gardens and containers. The plants may form rosettes, trunks, or clumps, with long strap-shaped leaves that radiate from growing points in green, bronze, burgundy, red, pink, cream, or variegated combinations. Some species become small trees with tufted crowns, while others remain more compact. Their beauty is architectural: leaf after leaf drawn into a fountain or spear-like arrangement, giving height and color without reliance on showy flowers.
Flowers appear in branched clusters, often pale and sometimes fragrant, followed by berries in suitable climates, but foliage remains the principal display. Cordylines are especially effective where broad-leaved tropicals need a sharper companion, or where a container arrangement requires a central vertical line. Dark forms add depth, bright variegated selections bring light, and green species can look elegantly simple against walls or water. The leaves may be smooth and glossy or slightly matte, and their long blades make wind and shadow visible.
Cultural needs vary by species, but most Cordylines require good drainage, moderate moisture, and protection from severe frost. Some tolerate coastal exposure and wind, while others are best treated as tender container plants in cold climates. Overwatering in cool conditions can rot roots, and leaf tips may brown in dry interiors or poor water quality. In design, Cordyline offers disciplined drama, combining vertical foliage, saturated color, and a clean silhouette that can make a terrace, conservatory, or mild-climate border feel more composed and spatially alive.
Because the leaves are strongly colored and linear, Cordyline often works best with simpler companions. Broad green foliage, pale walls, or restrained containers let the blades act as a clean vertical accent. Too many saturated foliage plants together can weaken its elegance, while a calmer setting makes the silhouette feel intentional.
