Heuchera, the coral bells, has become one of the great foliage genera of modern shade and part-shade planting. The plants form basal crowns of rounded, lobed, or scalloped leaves, often evergreen or semi-evergreen, and cultivated forms range through green, silver, pewter, purple, caramel, lime, rose, and nearly black. The leaf surface may be veined, ruffled, matte, or polished, giving small clumps an unusual amount of visual complexity. Even a single plant can act like a carefully chosen fabric in the garden.

The flowers rise on fine wands above the foliage, usually small bells in white, pink, coral, red, or cream. Culture depends on climate and parentage, but many heucheras prefer part shade, well-drained humus-rich soil, and consistent moisture without crown rot. In hot regions, afternoon shade protects pale or dark leaves from stress, while in cold climates frost heaving can lift crowns and require replanting. Older woody crowns may be divided or reset. The genus is most successful when used with restraint, since too many foliage colors can cheapen the effect. Chosen carefully, Heuchera offers enduring surface, delicate bloom, and a polished intimacy that suits the refined edge of a shaded border.

Heuchera is most persuasive when its leaf color is tied to the wider palette. A caramel form near coppery grasses, a silver form beside blue hostas, or a dark form under pale flowers can look composed; random contrasts can look commercial and restless. Flower wands may be left for pollinators or cut if foliage is the priority. The genus gives designers a precise tool for shade, but like any precise tool, it works best in a steady hand.
