Russian Sage (Perovskia)
Perovskia, still widely sold under that name though commonly treated botanically within Salvia, is best known as Russian sage, a plant of silver stems, aromatic foliage, and late-season blue haze. It grows as a herbaceous perennial or subshrub, often dying back in cold climates and returning from a woody crown. The leaves are gray-green, sometimes finely divided, and release a sharp sage-like scent when bruised. Its stems are pale and angular, giving the plant a dry, luminous framework even before the flowering wands expand.
In midsummer to autumn, small tubular blue to violet flowers appear in airy branching panicles, creating a clouded effect rather than a dense mass. The individual blossoms are modest, but together with the silvery calyces and stems they produce a cool, smoky color that is invaluable in heat. The plant seems to float above gravel, lavender, roses, coneflowers, and warm grasses, cooling stronger colors and extending the border’s life after early perennials have tired. Its beauty is disciplined by dryness: the less lush the setting, within reason, the more convincing the plant often becomes.
Perovskia prefers full sun, sharp drainage, and relatively lean soil. Rich ground, excess water, or shade can make it floppy and short-lived, while winter wet is a greater danger than summer drought. Cutting back in early spring encourages fresh stems and a more compact habit, though the pale winter framework may be left for seasonal texture. It is not culinary sage despite the scent, and in some climates it may spread by runners or seedlings. Used with restraint, the genus offers one of the border’s most useful cool notes: aromatic silver, fine blue bloom, and a dry elegance that suits modern and naturalistic plantings alike.
The plant’s apparent haze can tempt overuse, yet it is most elegant when allowed to punctuate rather than blur everything. A rhythm of silver-blue stems among warmer perennials can cool a border, while a larger drift can make a dry slope appear intentional and serene. Its looseness needs neighboring weight—stone, grasses, dark foliage, or shrubs—so that the airy bloom has something firm to play against.
