Lungwort (Pulmonaria)
Pulmonaria, the lungworts, are shade perennials valued for spring flowers and leaves that often look dusted, splashed, or washed with silver. The plants form low clumps from which hairy, oval to lance-shaped leaves expand, sometimes remaining handsome long after bloom. In good selections, the foliage is not merely background; it becomes a cool patterned surface under shrubs and deciduous trees, brightening shade with a quiet metallic softness. The slightly bristly texture gives the leaves substance and helps distinguish them from smoother woodland companions.
The flowers appear early, held in small clusters above the emerging foliage. They are tubular and often change color as they age, commonly opening pink and maturing toward blue or violet, though white and clear blue forms are also grown. This shifting color gives a single clump a lively, watercolor effect at a time when the garden is still spare. Bees visit the flowers readily, and the bloom pairs beautifully with hellebores, early bulbs, epimediums, and fresh fern croziers. The display is close to the ground, inviting a slower look rather than demanding attention from afar.
Pulmonaria prefers partial shade, humus-rich soil, and consistent moisture, though it dislikes waterlogged conditions and may decline in hot dry summers. Removing tired flowering stems and damaged leaves can encourage a cleaner flush of foliage. Powdery mildew may appear if plants are stressed by drought or poor air movement. When sited well, the genus offers an unusually satisfying sequence: early nectar-rich flowers, patterned leaves, and a long season of cool groundcover texture. Its elegance is tactile and intimate, built from silvered foliage and small flowers that carry spring into the shaded parts of the garden.
Lungwort is strongest where its silvered leaves can continue the work after spring flowers fade. Planted beside dark hellebore foliage, fine fern fronds, or the glossy leaves of epimedium, it becomes part of a long shade composition rather than a brief early novelty. Its low, patterned leaves also help mark the ground before later perennials expand, giving the shaded border a cultivated surface in a difficult season.
