Verbena
Verbena is a varied genus of annuals, perennials, and subshrubs with a long flowering season and an open, pollinator-friendly habit. Some garden forms creep or trail, making mats for containers and edges, while others rise on slender branching stems that thread through borders. Leaves are usually opposite, toothed or lobed, and sometimes rough to the touch. The genus often feels light in structure, allowing its flowers to appear as small clusters of color suspended above or woven through neighboring plants.
The flowers are tubular at the base and open into small five-lobed faces, gathered in spikes, heads, or clusters. Colors include purple, violet, lavender, pink, red, white, and bicolored forms. Tall Verbena bonariensis, though taxonomically and regionally discussed in various contexts, is especially known for airy purple clusters held high on wiry stems, attractive to butterflies and bees. Lower bedding verbenas provide denser mats of bloom, often useful in pots and sunny edging. The floral scale is small, but the repeated clusters create a sustained, sparkling effect.
Verbena generally prefers full sun, well-drained soil, and moderate fertility. Many forms dislike heavy wet conditions, and some are short-lived perennials grown as annuals in colder climates. Powdery mildew can be a problem where air is stagnant or plants are stressed. Certain species self-sow freely, and some are invasive in particular regions, so local guidance matters. Used thoughtfully, Verbena gives the garden looseness, color, and insect life over a long season, with a grace that comes from small flowers held in persistent motion rather than from heavy bloom.
Verbena is especially useful for adding continuity without heaviness. Low forms can spill through containers and path edges, while tall airy species can rise among grasses and late perennials with little visual blockage. The genus rewards deadheading, drainage, and restraint in feeding. With that discipline, its small flowers create a long, animated season that feels spontaneous but not careless.
