Cornus, the dogwoods, is a diverse genus of trees, shrubs, and groundcovers, united by opposite leaves in many species, distinctive venation, and a strong seasonal sequence. Flowering dogwoods are famous for showy bracts that surround the true flowers, creating broad white, pink, or red displays in spring. Shrubby dogwoods may be less floral but offer stems colored red, yellow, orange, or green in winter, while others bring variegated foliage, berries, or layered branching. The genus has a refined ability to mark the year without relying on one ornament alone.

The flowers themselves are often small, clustered at the center of bracts or held in flat cymes, but they support pollinators and lead to fruits that may be red, white, blue, or dark depending on species. Birds often relish them. In the garden, Cornus can provide woodland elegance, winter stem color, or architectural tiering, and the leaves often turn red, purple, or orange in autumn. Some species have a horizontal branching habit that looks especially graceful against shade, water, or a simple wall.

Cultural needs vary widely. Many dogwoods prefer moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and protection from stress, while shrubby species may tolerate wetter ground and periodic pruning. Diseases such as anthracnose or powdery mildew affect certain species and regions, and correct selection is important. Colored-stem dogwoods need renewal pruning to maintain vivid young stems. In thoughtful plantings, Cornus offers a sophisticated progression: spring bracts or flowers, summer foliage, autumn fruit and color, and winter stems or structure, all held in forms that feel natural, restrained, and deeply garden-worthy.

The genus is especially valuable in layered plantings, where different species can occupy different seasons and heights. A flowering dogwood above, a colored-stem shrub behind, and low shade plants below can create continuity from spring to winter. Cornus rewards this kind of thoughtful sequencing more than isolated specimen use.
