Red Twig Dogwood 'Baileyi' (Cornus sericea 'Baileyi') is a tough, multi-stem shrub grown for its brilliant red winter stems and reliable landscape performance. In early summer it produces flat clusters of small, creamy-white flowers, followed by pale berries that birds often notice. The deciduous foliage provides a green backdrop in summer, while the bare red stems become the main show once leaves drop.
At maturity, expect a strong, spreading shrub about 6-10 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide, with a naturally thicket-forming habit. Use it as a bold winter-interest plant in mixed borders, as a seasonal hedge, or massed for color and structure. It is also well-suited to low spots and naturalized edges where a durable woody plant is needed.
For best stem color, plant in full sun, though it also performs in part shade. It is adaptable to many soils and tolerates moisture, making it a good option for rain-garden margins, streamside plantings, or any site that stays evenly damp. Water regularly during establishment, then maintain consistent moisture during extended dry spells for best growth and color.
Prune in late winter to early spring to keep growth vigorous and stems brightly colored. Each year, remove a portion of the oldest stems at the base to encourage fresh new canes, or rejuvenate older plants by cutting back more aggressively when needed. Keep mulch a few inches away from the stems, and provide room for the plant's natural spread.
