Mazus
Mazus is a small creeping groundcover genus suited to the close scale of paths, stepping stones, troughs, and moist garden edges. The plants form low mats of small, scalloped or spoon-shaped leaves, spreading by slender stems that root as they travel. The foliage is fresh and modest, never grand, but it can knit bare soil with a pleasing softness. Its habit makes it useful where a lawn would be too coarse and a taller groundcover too assertive.
The flowers are tiny but charming, shaped rather like miniature snapdragons, usually in lavender, blue, purple, white, or marked combinations with yellow or spotted throats. They appear in spring and may repeat, rising just above the leaves in a way that rewards close viewing. Between stones, Mazus can make a path feel settled and alive, especially where moisture keeps the mat green. It is not a plant for distant display; its beauty is at the level of the footstep.
Mazus generally prefers sun to part shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates light foot traffic but not harsh drought or heavy trampling. In favorable conditions it can spread quickly, which is useful for filling gaps but requires edging near delicate alpines or small perennials. The genus is most successful when used as living mortar: soft leaves in narrow spaces, small flowers tucked between stones, and a low, green continuity that makes hard materials feel gentler and more connected to the garden around them.
The plant is especially pleasing when used to blur the edge of hard materials. It can make a stepping-stone path feel older and more settled, or soften the rim of a small terrace without obscuring the geometry. Because it hugs the ground, weeds that rise through it should be removed early. Mazus is not a grand design element, but it is excellent at the intimate work of finishing: small leaves, tiny flowers, and a living seam between garden surfaces. Its modesty is exactly why placement matters: seen closely, the flowers have a delicacy that would vanish in a large mixed border.
