These conifers usually carry flattened sprays or cords of scale-like foliage, though juvenile forms may appear finer or more needlelike. Garden selections may be golden, blue-green, gray, deep green, threadlike, weeping, upright, dwarf, or broadly pyramidal. Because the foliage is arranged in layered sprays, the plants often have a soft architectural surface, structured yet not harsh.

The cones are small and rounded, and the flowers are not ornamental in the familiar sense, so the genus is valued primarily for foliage and form. A golden dwarf can warm a winter border; a blue-green column can mark an entrance; a threadleaf form can loosen the edge of a shrub planting with drooping, tactile strands.
