Kalmia, the mountain laurels and their relatives, brings evergreen polish and intricate bloom to acidic woodland gardens. Because the roots are shallow and fine, Kalmia should be mulched gently and never buried deeply or cultivated around roughly. The shrub also benefits from stillness around it: too many competing flower forms diminish the intricacy of its cups.
