Kalmia latifolia 'Little Linda' is a compact mountain laurel selection that brings year-round structure and spring color to shady borders. You get glossy, dark green evergreen leaves and showy clusters of pink-to-white, starry flowers that open in late spring. Mature size is typically about 60-72 inches tall, forming a dense, rounded shrub that looks polished even when not in bloom.
Plant it where you can enjoy it up close: near an entry, along a woodland path, or as a foundation accent where afternoon shade keeps foliage looking its best. Part shade is ideal, though it can grow in deeper shade with fewer flowers. Give it acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil; mountain laurel strongly prefers lower pH conditions and can struggle in alkaline or heavy, poorly drained sites.
Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells, then maintain even moisture with a 2-3 inch mulch layer (keep mulch a few inches off the stems). Avoid overfertilizing; a light feeding formulated for acid-loving shrubs in spring is usually enough. Prune only as needed, right after flowering, to shape or to remove dead or crossing branches. Pair it with other acid-loving woodland plants such as azalea, rhododendron, pieris, heuchera, and shade-tolerant ferns for a cohesive, layered look.
