With Kalmia latifolia 'Kaleidoscope' (Mountain Laurel 'Kaleidoscope'), you get a broadleaf evergreen shrub valued for glossy foliage and late-spring clusters of cup-shaped blooms in rose-to-white tones with purple markings.
Plant it in cool, moist, acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil. A mulch layer helps keep roots cool and evenly moist, which is especially important in warmer or sunnier sites. Avoid heavy, poorly drained clay; consider raised planting if drainage is marginal.
Light is flexible: it will tolerate full sun to shade, but it typically looks best in part shade (morning sun with early to mid-afternoon shade). Keep soil consistently moist during establishment, then water during dry spells so the root zone does not dry out completely.
At maturity, this selection can reach about 8-10 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide. Use it as a specimen, in shrub borders, woodland edges, foundations, or mass plantings alongside other acid-loving shrubs such as azaleas and rhododendrons.
Prune lightly right after bloom if you need to shape it, and remove spent flower clusters to tidy the plant. All parts of mountain laurel are toxic if ingested, so place it where pets and children are unlikely to chew foliage.
