Peony (Paeonia)
Paeonia, the peonies, carries one of the most luxurious presences in temperate gardens, yet its beauty begins in structure. Herbaceous species rise each spring from substantial crowns with reddish shoots that unfurl into divided, often glossy foliage, while tree peonies hold woody stems and intersectional hybrids combine qualities of both. The leaves are deeply cut or compound, giving even the nonflowering plant a handsome mass that can support a border after bloom has passed. A well-grown peony has a rounded, settled poise, as if it belongs permanently to its place.
The flowers range from simple bowls with golden stamens to immense double forms packed with petals, and their colors include white, cream, blush, coral, rose, crimson, yellow, and deep wine. Many are fragrant, though scent varies, and the petals often have a remarkable texture: satin, silk, or thin porcelain depending on cultivar and light. Bloom is not usually long, but it is unforgettable, unfolding in late spring or early summer at the precise moment when the garden can hold richness without heaviness. The buds, often rounded and touched by ants gathering nectar, add anticipation before the flowers open.
Paeonia prefers full sun to light shade, fertile well-drained soil, and a settled root run; herbaceous peonies resent being planted too deeply and may sulk after disturbance. Good air movement helps reduce fungal problems, and heavy double flowers often need discreet support if rain is expected. Once established, many peonies endure for decades, becoming more dignified rather than tired. They are superb with irises, catmints, alliums, roses, and early grasses, where their sumptuous bloom can be framed by cleaner textures. The genus offers abundance, but not frivolity: its richness is anchored by longevity, fine foliage, and seasonal restraint.
A peony’s short bloom season is not a defect when the plant is placed with companions that understand succession. Early bulbs can occupy the ground before the shoots expand, catmint or geranium can soften the base after flowering, and later perennials can take the visual lead. The peony then becomes a treasured chapter in the border rather than a plant expected to perform every role.
