Paeonia × itoh 'Bartzella' (Itoh Peony 'Bartzella') brings the best of both worlds to your garden: the big, showy flowers you expect from peonies, with a sturdy, well-branched habit that holds blooms better than many older forms.
Plan for a mature size of about 24-36 inches tall and roughly 24-36 inches wide. Give it rich, well-drained soil and steady moisture through spring growth. Once the plant is established, it is happiest with deep, occasional watering rather than frequent light sprinkling.
Choose a spot in full sun to part shade. In hotter or brighter exposures, a little afternoon shade can help flowers last longer and keep the plant looking fresh through the season. Provide good air circulation and avoid crowded plantings to reduce leaf issues later in the summer.
Planting depth matters for peonies. Set the crown so the buds are only lightly covered, then mulch lightly (if at all) and keep mulch pulled back from the crown. After flowering, remove spent blooms if you want a tidier look, but keep the foliage growing so it can recharge for next year’s show.
Expect a strong spring display, attractive divided foliage, and a long-lived perennial that settles in over time. If you need to move it, do so carefully and be patient while it re-establishes before returning to full bloom.
