Rhododendron is a vast genus that includes the plants commonly called rhododendrons and azaleas, ranging from low alpine shrubs to large evergreen or deciduous woodland specimens. The leaves may be leathery and evergreen, thin and deciduous, small and tight, or broad and dramatic, often arranged toward the ends of the branches in layered whorls. Many species form rounded or tiered shrubs that bring year-round structure to acidic gardens. Even before flowering, the genus can be handsome through dark foliage, felted indumentum, smooth bark, or sculptural branching.

The flowers are usually borne in clusters or trusses, with funnel-, bell-, or tubular-shaped blooms in white, pink, red, lavender, purple, yellow, orange, and many nuanced blends. Some are fragrant, particularly certain deciduous azaleas, while others impress through sheer size and color saturation. Bloom time varies from early spring to early summer, and in a well-composed planting the genus can create a long, layered progression of color under high trees. The flowers have a softness that can be sumptuous, but the best displays are anchored by foliage and shade rather than color alone.

Rhododendrons require acidic, well-drained, organic soil, consistent moisture, and roots kept cool by mulch or companion planting. They resent lime, compaction, deep planting, and drought, and many prefer filtered light rather than harsh exposure. All parts of many species contain grayanotoxins and can be poisonous if ingested, including to livestock and pets. Siting should also consider mature size, because crowded shrubs lose their natural dignity. In the right conditions, Rhododendron gives the garden a richly sheltered atmosphere: evergreen depth, spring bloom, occasional fragrance, and a woodland luxuriance that remains disciplined when properly placed.

Rhododendron plantings are most beautiful when they avoid the look of isolated colored domes on bare mulch. Layering them with compatible groundcovers, ferns, spring bulbs, and small trees creates the woodland conditions their roots prefer and the visual depth their flowers deserve. The bloom is then supported by a living setting, and the evergreen or deciduous framework remains meaningful after the trusses fade.
